Saint of Gamblers

1995 (Extended Cameo)

Capitalizing on his own gambling god franchise, Wong Jing references his previous films with Chow Yun-fat, Andy Lau, and Stephen Chiau. In this version, Macau gambler Ray Thai is looking for a new ‘saint of gamblers’ to deflect from his own shady dealings with Japanese triads. He finds his patsy in a character named God Bless You, a Mainlander with supernatural powers discovered by Ng Man-tat. Ray Thai is supported by his assistant/faithful girlfriend (Chingmy Yau) and a kid; the girlfriend discovers almost too late Thai’s deception and her love for God Bless You.

Yen has an extensive cameo playing Lone Seven, an Interpol special investigator hot on Thai’s trail. He’s identified throughout by a recurrent guitar riff, even in the fight scenes. In one he takes on Thai’s gang in a locker room; in another, he and the kid rescue Chingmy and God Bless You from the villains in humorous fashion. The kid imitates Yen’s moves, and Yen advises him, ‘You handle the six on the left, and I’ll handle the two on the right’ until they decide otherwise.
