Ballistic Kiss After making Legend, which is a period piece, set mainly in exteriors and with a lot of martial arts, I wanted to make a totally different kind of film for my second movie. Ballistic Kiss is an urban thriller, with more gunplay. The subject matter of both films is pretty dark, but visually Legend is bright and Ballistic Kiss is very dark. Maybe this means I'm getting more depressed! What I wanted to say in Ballistic Kiss to people… I find it frustrating. I have difficulty first to get people to watch the film, and then when people do watch it, the ones that have a positive response-do they fully understand what I was trying to get across, and then, do they really fully appreciate it? Not really. Very, very few. They feel it, but do they know it? No. How do you confirm the souls of them out there? Sort of like a confirmed echo in their heart. I'm trying to share my knowledge of that. I'm trying to preach in a way. This is the feeling-can you feel it? I think that maybe was exactly how I felt and I wanted to interpret that, I wanted to emphasize that. It's so hard for people to understand that. If they really watch it, I think they can feel my heart. Definitely there were lots of obstacles to overcome. I intended the film to be a lot better. To be honest, there are imperfections because of the limited budget. Some days it was a challenge just to be able to secure the money to film on a given day. The film was supposed to be the first Hong Kong production completely in English. But I soon discovered that my female lead's English wasn't good enough. And scenes had to be cut because money wasn't coming from the distributor. So I feel some resentment. Still, as much as I wish Ballistic Kiss could be a better film, the recognition it gained from critics and at festivals speaks for itself. And you can never please everybody.
